The Perfect Wines To Pair With Our New Cakes

Know what’s better than the already amazing selection of cakes at the Makery?

An even bigger selection! And that’s exactly what you’ve got with the 9 irresistible new flavor combos we’ve debuted.

There are plenty of ways to savor the sheer deliciousness of our new cakes. But if you want to be oh so grown-up and a little naughty about it, you can’t go wrong by pairing them with the perfect wines to complement their incredible flavors.

How to Pair Wine With Cake

Pairing wine and cake isn’t the easiest if you’ve never done it, so let’s take a quick look at the basics.

Wine and Fruity Cakes: When it comes to fruit anything, it’s a good general rule to pair it with a subtly sweet white wine (sparkling wine or champagne’s also perfectly acceptable). Alternatively, pair berry and red fruit flavors with a rosé that picks up those flavors.

Wine and Syrupy Cakes: If you’re serving a cake made with sweet and sticky ingredients such as caramel, honey, syrup, or toffee, you’ll want to pair it with a wine that will enhance those flavors. Choose either a crisp white (a sparkling white works too!) for a refreshing contrast or a full-bodied, rich fortified wine that isn’t too sweet.

Wine and Dairy-driven Cakes: The most important rule for pairing wine and cake with creamy, dairy-rich flavors or ingredients is to match flavors. Choose either an oak-aged white wine with buttery notes or a sweet white wine with honey notes. Demi-sec champagne also works well with these cakes.

Wine and Chocolate Cakes: The type of wine you choose to pair with a chocolate cake depends on the type of chocolate used for the cake. Fortified deep red wines go well with dark chocolate cakes, while white wines complement milk and white chocolate cakes beautifully.

Perfect Pairings: Wines For Our New Cakes

Now that we’ve gone over the basics, let’s discover the perfect wines to pair with our new cakes.

Tooty Fruity and Sparkling Rosé

Our new Tooty Fruity cake is a Funfetti vanilla cake with multicolor sprinkles, filled with a fruity compote made from strawberry, raspberry, and lemon, and iced in a sprinkle-packed buttercream.

While a subtly sweet white wine will work well with this cake, we think it’s even better paired with a sparkling rosé. This is a fun wine with refreshing creamy, delicate strawberry flavors that work well with the vanilla and red fruit flavors of the cake. What’s more, the palate-cleansing bubbles cut through the sweetness.

Butter Toffee Cake and Oaked Chardonnay

Our new Butter Toffee cake was the clear winner at our flavor premier at VenuHub’s October luncheon, and it’s easy to see why.

This white chocolate cake is filled with an extra buttery buttercream, iced in a brown sugar buttercream, and topped with specialty toffee. A crisp Chardonnay aged in oak barrels giving it buttery flavors and vanilla notes is the perfect wine to pair with this delectable cake.

Rumchata Cake and Gewürztraminer

If you love Tres Leches cake, you’ll love our new Rumchata Cake. Elevating the traditional favorite, this cake is twice-filled with cinnamon Bavarian cream and a rum-soaked Bavarian cream and it’s iced in our subtly sweet cream cheese icing.

We recommend serving it with Gewürztraminer, which isn’t sweet enough to overpower the cake, while its floral qualities play well with the spices of the rum. Alternatively, pair this cake with a sparkling Spanish Cava. The wine won’t overpower the cake’s sweetness, and its creamy bubbles will refresh your palate after the sheer decadence of this new addition to our menu.

Caramel Apple Cake and Semi-Sweet Riesling

Our new Caramel Apple Cake is a sumptuous white chocolate cake marbled with pumpkin cake filled with apple pie filling and caramel sauce and iced in our subtly sweet cream cheese icing. Pair this beauty with a Semi-Sweet Riesling, which can hold its own against the caramel. The wine’s tropical fruit notes complement the apple’s sweetness beautifully.

Mexican Chocolate Cake and Amarone

Calling all chocoholics! Our new Mexican Chocolate Cake is a decadently dark chocolate cake twice filled with chipotle chocolate buttercream and cinnamon Bavarian cream and iced in our chocolate buttercream.

Pair this luscious cake with Amarone, a full-bodied red that’s one of the more premium wines around. Similar to Port, this wine’s chocolatey flavor with spiced and coffee undertones makes this pairing perfect.

Chai Cake and Sauvignon Blanc

Our new vanilla Chai Cake is filled with a chai Bavarian cream and iced in vanilla whipped icing. The predominant flavors here are vanilla and chai spices, so you need to pair this cake with a wine that works well with those elements.

We recommend a new world Sauvignon Blanc as its herbaceous, almost spicy tones will complement the cake.

Dipped Strawberry Cake and Chardonnay

If you go gaga for our famous pink champagne cake, you’re in for a transcendental experience with our new Dipped Strawberry Cake. This new addition to our menu sees our pink champagne cake thrice filled with a fresh strawberry filling, chocolate ganache, and whipped icing before being iced in our specialty buttercream.

The best wine to pair this cake with is a warm-climate unoaked Chardonnay. The sweet fruit flavors work well with the cake’s strawberry flavors, while the brightness and acidity of the wine pair well with the buttercream. A bright, fruity rosé (sparkling or otherwise) works well too.

Pucker Up Cake and Prosecco

Our new Pucker Up cake is a lemon-and-lime-soaked cake twice filled with lemon and lime Bavarian cream and iced in lemon buttercream. The ideal wine pairing is Prosecco, as the tangy citrus notes of this light sparkling wine will intensify the cake’s citrus flavors, enhancing both the cake and the wine. It’s a match made in heaven.

Chocolate Banana Cream Cake and Muscatel

An utterly moreish treat, our new Chocolate Banana Cream Cake is our milk chocolate cake that’s been marbled with our banana bread cake, filled with banana buttercream and whipped icing, and iced in caramel buttercream.

Pair this cake with a dessert wine such as Muscatel. Dark, sticky and unctuous, Muscatel pairs beautifully with banana. Alternatively, choose a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc, a Californian Chardonnay, or a South African Cabernet Sauvignon.

There you have it—the sweetest wine-filled ways to celebrate the launch of our new cakes!
